Leaders from around the world will focus on tackling the urgent climate crisis, but will they discuss the catastrophic failure of governments in the Amazon Basin to defend environmental defenders, many of whom are indigenous peoples? A recent report, released by Global Witness on 17 September 2025, found that 146 environmental defenders were tragically murdered, with 80% of those murders occurring in Latin America. Environmental defenders and the fight against the climate crisis are intrinsically linked. In 2024, the UN agreed to begin the process of creating a Crimes Against Humanity Treaty, in order to strengthen the prosecution of crimes against humanity the world over. The term ‘Crimes against humanity’ covers crimes such as genocide, apartheid, extermination and enslavement, among others. These are all already illegal under international law, but a new treaty would make it easier to prevent and prosecute crimes against humanity. Preparations begin in January 2026, and they represent a crucial opportunity for the world to take a tougher stance against the worst atrocities we face today. Crimes against humanity are the gravest offences that can be committed, and a comprehensive global treaty would protect all of us from the worst possible forms of human suffering. We must not waste this pivotal moment to defend the most basic human rights of all people, and we at Activists Without Borders call on all nations and delegations to ensure they do all they can to secure a treaty to protect not only the most vulnerable in our world, but every single one of us.

As climate change causes temperatures to rise, these currents that bring warm water from the equator to Europe, and push cooler water back down south could be nearing a point of no return. According to the latest science, these currents are slowing faster than expected, with potentially devastating effects. If we continue to use fossil fuels and emit greenhouse gases at the current rate, the whole system could pass the point of no return in the next 10 years, and the whole world will suffer the consequences of it’s inevitable collapse. Europe would cool, Britain, Ireland and Norway would be the worst affected, with devastating temperature drops of up to 5-15°C! At the other end, the US and Caribbean could see massive sea level rises and even hotter temperatures, amplifying the already deadly rises we could see with global warming. The only way to stop this is to end fossil fuels now! Last week, over 500 mainly peaceful protesters were arrested and detained at the latest demonstrations in Morocco, as part of the GenZ 212 protests that have broken out across the country since September. At least 272 remain in detention, and at least 36 minors are still behind bars in Morocco. Activists Without Borders calls again for the immediate release of the peaceful protesters. The Genz 212 activists who are still detained face prison sentences of up to six months for ‘illegal protests’ even though they remained completely peaceful. The mass arrests are being seen by some as an attempt to suppress protests and criminalise activism. Nepal’s Gen Z Protests: Youth Rising for Freedom a Nepal’s Gen Z Protests: Youth Rising for Freedom and Justice In September 2025, young people in Nepal, often called Generation Z, started a big protest in Kathmandu. The government had suddenly banned Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and many other social media apps. The leaders said it was for control and registration, but young people saw it as an attack on their freedom of speech and expression. The protest quickly grew larger than just social media. Many young people were already angry about corruption, lack of jobs, and unfair politics in the country. They gathered in the streets, especially in front of Parliament, shouting for justice and holding the Nepalese flag. Their signs read things like “Enough is Enough” and “Respect Our Jobs.” Police and the army tried to stop the protests using tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and even live bullets. Sadly, almost 20 people were killed, and hundreds were injured. But the protests continued because the young people felt they were fighting for their future. After a few days, the government removed the social media ban, and some leaders, including the Prime Minister, resigned. The protests showed the power of Nepal’s young generation. They proved that they can stand up together for freedom, fairness, and a better future for their country.
